Talented trio take on Market Drayton pub

An entrepreneurial trio have breathed new life in to a Market Drayton pub as part of ambitious plans to grow their fledgling independent pub group.

The Loggerheads pub on Eccleshall Road will reopen on the 26th February following a massive £270,000 investment programme jointly funded by the Hart & Buck Pub Group in partnership with national pub company Punch.

The new-look pub has had a complete makeover to the bar and dining area as well as the function room, large beer garden and terrace. It is the fourth pub to be opened by the Hart & Buck Pub Group, which was formed in 2013 by Cheshire-based partners Peter Butler, Charles Spibey and his wife, Gill.

Despite having had no prior experience in the pub trade – Peter has a background in retail and Charles in property services – they successfully turned around their first pub, the White Hart at Hough, and haven’t looked back since.

The Loggerheads will be the group’s first foray outside of Cheshire and, according to Gill, it will be their flagship pub, focussing on providing quality real ales and traditional home cooked pub food.

She said: “This is a very exciting project for us. The Loggerheads has huge potential and we are really looking forward to welcoming the local community as well as bringing in new customers from around the region.

“There is a lot of space inside and outside the pub and we keen to use this for events, parties and weddings. It is also a popular dog walking area so we will be opening up from early in the day to serve breakfast and coffee.”

As part of the refurbishment around 25 new jobs have been created at the Loggerheads. This includes new managers, Karen Southwick  and Lucy Green who have more than 20 years’ experience running pubs in the area.

In addition to a range of quality beers, spirits and wines, the new-look Loggerheads will be serving tasty smokehouse-style dishes alongside the main menu.

New Business Development Manager for Punch, Jonathan Thompson, said: “Investing in the bricks and mortar of a pub is only part of the equation. You also need to invest in people and we’re delighted to have attracted such an accomplished team to the Loggerheads.

“I am sure it will be a great success and am very much looking forward to supporting Peter, Charles and Gill as they continue to grow the business.”
